Peony Planting And Care

Thank you for choosing The Flower Wagon! Peonies are one of the longest-living and most rewarding perennials you can grow. With proper planting and care, they can thrive for 50 years or more, producing larger and more beautiful blooms with each passing season.

When Your Peony Roots Arrive

Your peony roots are shipped dormant and may look dry or even a little rough—that's completely normal.

When you receive your order:

  • Open the package as soon as possible.
  • Inspect the roots to ensure they are firm and healthy.
  • If you cannot plant immediately, store the roots in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place (35–45°F is ideal), away from direct sunlight.
  • Do not seal them in plastic or allow them to sit in standing water.
  • Plant within one to two weeks for the best results.

Choosing the Right Location

Peonies love sunshine and reward it with more blooms.

Choose a location that offers:

  • At least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
  • Well-drained soil.
  • Good air circulation.
  • Protection from standing water after heavy rains.

Avoid planting where large trees or shrubs will compete for water and nutrients.

Preparing the Soil

Peonies prefer rich, loose soil.

Before planting:

  • Loosen the soil 12–18 inches deep.
  • Mix in compost or well-aged organic matter if your soil is heavy or poor.
  • If drainage is an issue, consider planting in a raised bed.

How to Plant

  1. Dig a hole about 12–18 inches wide and deep.
  2. Create a small mound of soil in the center of the hole.
  3. Spread the roots gently over the mound.
  4. Position the pink or white growing buds ("eyes") pointing upward.
  5. Cover with soil so the eyes are only 1–2 inches below the soil surface.

Do not plant too deep. This is the most common reason peonies fail to bloom.

Space plants approximately 3–4 feet apart to allow room for mature growth.

Watering

Water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil.

After establishment:

  • Water deeply during dry periods.
  • Avoid constantly soggy soil.
  • Mature peonies are relatively drought tolerant but perform best with consistent moisture.

Mulching

Apply a light layer of mulch after planting to help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

In spring, pull mulch back from the crown so the new shoots can emerge easily.

What to Expect

Peonies are an investment in the future.

  • Year 1: The plant focuses on establishing roots. Blooming may be limited or absent.
  • Year 2: Expect stronger growth with a few blooms.
  • Year 3 and beyond: Plants reach their full potential and produce abundant, spectacular flowers each spring.

Patience pays off!

Fertilizing

In early spring, apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer around the plant—never directly on the crown.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which encourages leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Supporting Large Blooms

Many peony varieties produce enormous blossoms that may bend after heavy rain.

Consider using a peony support ring or plant support before the stems become tall.

Deadheading

Once flowers fade:

  • Remove spent blooms.
  • Leave the foliage intact.

The leaves continue gathering energy for next year's flowers.

Fall Care

After the first hard frost:

  • Cut stems back to about 1–2 inches above the ground.
  • Remove and discard old foliage to help reduce disease.
  • A light layer of mulch can be applied in colder climates after the ground freezes.

Year-to-Year Care

Peonies are low-maintenance once established.

Each year:

  • Remove winter mulch in early spring.
  • Fertilize lightly.
  • Water during extended dry periods.
  • Deadhead spent flowers.
  • Cut foliage back after frost.

Unlike many perennials, peonies dislike being moved. Leave them in place whenever possible, and they will reward you with bigger, healthier plants every year.
