When Your Tulip Bulbs Arrive

Your tulip bulbs are shipped dormant and ready for fall planting.

When you receive your order:

  • Open the package as soon as possible.
  • Inspect the bulbs to ensure they are firm and healthy.
  • Store them in a cool, dry, well-ventilated location until planting.
  • Keep bulbs out of direct sunlight and away from excess moisture.
  • Do not refrigerate bulbs with apples or other ripening fruit, as the ethylene gas they produce can damage the flower inside the bulb.

When to Plant

Tulips should be planted in the fall, after temperatures have cooled but before the ground freezes.

In most northern climates, this is typically:

  • Late September through November

The ideal soil temperature is 40–55°F.

Choosing the Right Location

Tulips perform best in:

  • Full sun (6 or more hours daily)
  • Well-drained soil
  • Areas that do not stay wet during winter

They also perform well beneath deciduous trees, where they receive spring sunlight before the trees leaf out.

Preparing the Soil

Healthy soil helps produce healthy blooms.

Before planting:

  • Loosen the soil 8–12 inches deep.
  • Mix in compost if needed to improve drainage and soil quality.
  • Avoid heavy clay soils that remain wet throughout winter.

How to Plant

  • Dig a hole approximately 6–8 inches deep, or about three times the height of the bulb.
  • Place the bulb with the pointed end facing upward and the flat side downward.
  • Cover with soil and gently firm the ground.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.

Space bulbs:

  • 4–6 inches apart for a traditional display.
  • 2–3 inches apart for a fuller, more dramatic look.

Planting in groups creates a much more impressive display than planting single bulbs.

Watering

Water thoroughly after planting.

After that, nature usually provides enough moisture through fall, winter, and spring. Additional watering is generally only needed during unusually dry periods.

Avoid overwatering, as bulbs can rot in saturated soil.

Mulching

Apply 2–3 inches of mulch after planting if desired.

Mulch helps:

  • Moderate soil temperatures
  • Reduce weed growth
  • Protect bulbs during winter

What to Expect

During winter, bulbs develop strong roots beneath the soil.

In early spring:

  • Green shoots emerge.
  • Buds quickly follow.
  • Flowers typically bloom for 1–3 weeks, depending on weather and variety.

Fertilizing

Feed bulbs:

  • Once when planting.
  • Again in early spring as foliage emerges using a balanced bulb fertilizer.

Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizers.

After Blooming

Once flowers fade:

  • Remove the spent flower head.
  • Leave all leaves and stems in place.

The foliage continues producing energy that recharges the bulb for next year's blooms.

Allow the leaves to naturally yellow and die back before removing them. This usually takes about 6–8 weeks after flowering.

Will My Tulips Come Back Every Year?

Many tulips can return for several years with proper care, especially:

  • Darwin Hybrid Tulips
  • Fosteriana Tulips
  • Species (botanical) Tulips

Some highly bred varieties produce their best display during the first spring and gradually decline over time.

Many gardeners choose to plant fresh bulbs each fall for the most vibrant and consistent spring color.

Dividing Bulbs

Over time, bulbs may naturally multiply.

If flowering decreases after several years:

  • Allow foliage to completely die back.
  • Dig bulbs in early summer.
  • Separate healthy offsets.
  • Store in a cool, dry location.
  • Replant in the fall.

Common Tips for Success

  • Plant bulbs as soon as possible during the fall planting season.
  • Choose sunny locations with excellent drainage.
  • Avoid planting where water collects.
  • Protect bulbs from squirrels and other digging animals if needed by using bulb cages or applying a repellant.
